Discipline Your Cat Without Violence

Do not ever hit your cat? Well, don't - it serves no useful purpose. There are other ways to discipline him or her. You and your cat should have a relationship of mutual respect, not one of anger and avoidance.

If your cat thinks that you cause him pain and distress then he will avoid having a good rapport with you. Disciplining should be in a way that makes him feel that it is not you doing it. And there are ways to achieve this end.

In a way, indirect discipline is the best way to get cats to do things as we want. The idea is to get whatever they think that they are doing wrong to be the cause of the discomfiture. If they are clawing and by doing so it causes discomfort, he will soon stop.

Here is an example. Imagine that your cat urinates in odd places in the house. By yelling at him and hitting him, all you are doing is making him avoid you. It doesn't stop him doing the dirty deed. What you need is a repellent of some sort that makes him feel uncomfortable where he wishes to urinate.

This repellent can be in the form of a loud noise (newspaper smacked in the hand), water bottle spray or a hiss from an aerosol can, or a pungent smell that he doesn't like - like spices.

Using these methods ensures that any discomfort is not attributed directly to you so the relationship between you and your cat continues.
