How to Choose a Cat Breed to Be Your Pet

Are you looking for a buddy or a companion cat? Or are you interested in breeding and showing cats? Only a very small percentage of cat owners want to breed and exhibit their cats. Most are looking for that special cat to share their heart and home.

Before you acquire a cat, ask yourself if you are willing and able to provide for him for some 18 years or more. Do you have a safe environment in which he can live? Do you have the time to groom and care for him? Are your children trained in the responsibilities of pet ownership? Are your other pets willing to accept a newcomer?

If you answer yes to these questions, then ask yourself if you can afford a cat. The initial cost of a kitten or cat is nothing compared with the ongoing costs of keeping him safe and healthy. You must be sure you can afford to feed him, as well as keep him current on his vaccinations, yearly physicals and any other veterinary care he may need. If you are still answering yes, rest assured that the time and money you will be repaid a hundred times by the companionship and love he will give you.

It does not matter how large or small your house is because cats fit anywhere and so any type of home will do. Most pet owners live in cities and are apartment dwellers, and the absence of a yard is not a problem. All cats can adapt to life indoors. Even if they object at first, simply ignore their pleas to go outside and they will eventually quiet down. If you live in an area where your cat is safe outdoors, then any yard is big enough for his needs.

There are many adult cats that, for various reasons, need find loving homes. It is not always easy adopting an adult, but the affection you reap will be well worth your patience. Kittens, on the other hand, are easier to adopt as they adapt more readily.

If you have other cats in your home, they may adjust more easily to a kitten, whereas if you have no other cats, you may want to adopt a fully grown cat. An adult is not as boisterous as a kitten, and so may be more suitable for an older person.
