History Of Cats

In the Ninth century in South Wales a prince called Hywel Dda passed a law against the killing of a cat or its kittens. This was because of the perceived value of cats and kittens in protecting the stores of grain from rats and mice etc. Today, cats still perform a service to the community by keeping down the rodent population.

The wild instinct is still very much within cats, even little domesticated cats, as can be seen when you watch them play around with a bird that they have just caught. It is quite apparent that they are very proud of what they have done by catching the bird, and more often than not, they will play with the prey, rather than eat it - which can seem cruel to the prey and I must admit, I have rescued many birds from the jaws of my cats.

However, we should remember that it is a cat's instinct to hunt and kill and rodents are there natural food of choice! This does not mean though that a cat should be left to hunt for it's own food. Working cats need more than just milk in order to keep strong and healthy and in a good condition.

Well fed cats and kittens will still hunt for sport and they need the vitality and stamina to be able to do their job properly.

After a hard day's hunting, a cat likes nothing more than to sit in front of a fire. In fact it is likely that the cat's love of warmth is what attracted him to the company of man in the first place. The cats loves comfort and heat, and will seek out the best chair in the house, and the best bed to sleep on - right next to the radiator no doubt! If you let your cat rule too much , you will find yourself running around and tending to his every need - which of course he will love!
